The Idiot’s Lantern

Continuing to post on shallow topics in the midst of others’ heavy political discourse, what TV shows are people watching these days? Any can’t-miss shows on the TiVo? Lost, perhaps? Battlestar Galactica? (ahem) Doctor Who? *Cyndi and Jim immediately see through Valerie’s thin ruse of listing the show she’s obsessed with third* Looking forward to the return of Mad Men? Excited about Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse or still pining for Firefly? Comment about it!

If there’s interest, I or others could initiate an open thread after a new episode of whatever-it-is airs for water cooler discussion and the like.

For our part, other than the aforementioned Who and its slutty stepsister Torchwood, we are currently working our way through the BBC show Life on Mars which starred John Simm. We have been TiVoing Galactica but haven’t actually gotten around to starting the new season yet. And we are still laughing our asses of at Scrubs and at Neil Patrick Harris in How I Met Your Mother.

My two favorites have been Battlestar and Heroes. I am looking forward to Dollhouse, though the fact it is on Fox means they may cancel it even if its good like they did Firefly.

I only watched a couple of episodes of Dr Who and it didnt really grab me. What is it about the show that you like?

(Augh, you can't edit comments on this thing? *grumble*) I think what I love about New Who is that it is so character-driven. The plots are sometimes quite good and sometimes, well, silly. But over all of that are some incredibly well-drawn characters that I just fell in love with. They gave the Doctor an emotional life that is very compelling with either Eccleston (9) or Tennant (10). I could (but won't) write a long treatise on Rose, the companion for the first 2 seasons of New Who. All of the companions (Rose, Martha, Donna) have been thoroughly fleshed-out characters with lives and back-stories. So that's why I love it.

Hi Guys,
New computer, so I might even contribute on occasion now. I can recommend another British import: Top Gear. Some of you may have encountered it on BBC America, or on the newstands, in magazine form. It's a motoring show, of a sort, hosted by Jeremy Clarkson (tall, snide), James May (tall, looks like the third-place finisher in a Stephen Fry lookalike contest), and Richard Hammond (not tall, too much product in his hair, was nearly decapitated during what was the highest-speed car crash ever documented in the British Isles).
It's not the car news and reviews that make it such fun. This is the only show I know of that has had Dame Helen Mirren take a bargain bin Chevy around a race track to see if she could score a better time than Billie Piper or Ron Wood. Simon Cowell is the current champion of the Put a Star in a Reasonably Priced Car segment, by the way.
The producers of the show are also come up with bizarre challenges for the hosts. Challenges have included: spending $1000 each on used cars in Miami and then driving to New Orleans (dead cows and rock-throwing rednecks figure in this one); spending 1200 quid each on used cars in Botswana, said cars to have no 4-wheel drive, nor any off-road modifications, and then driving across the country from Zimbabwe to Namibia (if your car broke down beyond repair, you had to finish the drive in The Volkswagen Beetle Of Shame); and, my favorite, each host was required to purchase a cheap used car (1500 pounds, I think), convert it into an amphibious car, and drive it from Dover to Calais. Check it out,
Shane.

P. S. : Looking forward to Dollhouse, mostly for Eliza Dushku and her inevitable leather pants, but still miss Firefly.
